Portable Nuclear Power! KLT-40S nuclear reactors

Akademik Lomonosov is the name of world's first portable nuclear power plant, which was built into ship and be taken anywhere in the world. This ship is named after Academician Mikhail Lomonosov, he was known as Russian polymath, scientist and writer, who made important contributions to literature, education, and science. Among his discoveries were the atmosphere of Venus and the law of conservation of mass in chemical reactions in 17th century.

Portable Nuclear Power aka Akademik Lomonosov Nuclear Power ship's construction process begin on 15th of April 2007 at Sevmash Submarine-Building Plant in Severodvinsk.

Portable Nuclear Power plant ship is operated by 69 member crew and operates 2 modified KLT-40S nuclear reactors (Icebreaker type) producing 35x2 MW electric or 150x2 MW thermal power

It's estimated project cost was 232 million dollars, initially the portable nuclear power plant was built to supply power to Severodvinsk town and Sevmash itself. But later on the Russian government approved the transfer of work from Sevmash to the Baltic Shipyard in Saint Petersburg.

Akademik Lomonosov has a length of 144 metres (472 ft) and width of 30 metres (98 ft). It has a displacement of 21,500 tonnes and a crew of 69 people.[11] For the power generation, it has two modified KLT-40 naval propulsion reactors together providing up to 70 MW of electricity or 300 MW of heat. Reactors were designed by OKBM Afrikantov and assembled by Nizhniy Novgorod Research and Development Institute Atomenergoproekt (both part of Atomenergoprom). The reactor vessels were produced by Izhorskiye Zavody. The turbo-generators were supplied by Kaluga Turbine Plant.
